January Newsletter

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you had a good Christmas, or as good as you could in the current circumstances. With the Covid-19 vaccine on the horizon let’s hope for better times ahead in 2021.
Last year was difficult for us all, not least in terms of our fundraising, but I have been overwhelmed by your continuing support throughout the year and with the amount we still managed to raise. Our 2020 TLF accounts are now being finalised and audited in readiness for publication at our AGM in March.
Although we are still uncertain how things will pan out over the coming months, the TLF committee are continuing to create a fundraising programme for 2021, and until we return to our full fundraising plan, we will publish events monthly via this newsletter, email distribution and social media.

December fundraising.
• 12 Days of Christmas virtual Jigsaw
We scheduled this on-line event to run for a whole week, but with your fantastic support we completed the jigsaw in just 3 days, raising £361.47 – exceeding our target of £250! Our thanks to Barbara Smithson for piecing the 1000 jigsaw together as your donations rolled in.
• RNLI Reindeer Run
TLF member Cathy Craig raised a fantastic final figure of £350 for her Reindeer ‘Walk’. Well done Cathy and thank you for raising such a huge amount!

January fundraising.
‘Lose it for the Lifeboats’a TLF fundraiser which runs for the whole of January.
You will already have seen our publicity for this first event of 2021, which we have also published to fitness centres, slimming clubs etc around the whole Bay. It is a fundraiser which, for those of us who would like to lose a few pounds, can do from home whilst raising money at the same time. I have my own weight loss target, so the chocolates are definitely out of bounds!
Please encourage your family and friends to either sponsor you or get involved themselves.
Remember – New Year / New You!

TLF Membership.
As you know our membership renewal date is 1st January so you should have already made arrangements to pay your subs for 2021. Due to Data Protection rules we are unable to hold contact data for anyone who is not a fully paid up TLF member, so if you have not yet paid please do so quickly so that you continue to receive TLF and Torbay Station news and updates.
Please contact our membership secretary Anne Thorpe – 01803 855329 – to arrange renewal.

Middle Street Shop and Kiosk.
As you know Brixham is currently in Covid Restrictions Tier 3. Under those Tier 3 rules shops are still permitted to open so our Middle Street Shop and Kiosk are currently trading, working to Winter opening hours as below. We need to balance the cost of heating in the two shops against the revenue we generate, so we plan to keep these opening hours under regular review and if footfall/sales drop significantly we will reduce opening hours further or may consider closing until visitors are able to return to Brixham.

Shop – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday – 10am to 1pm
Kiosk – 7 days per week – 11am to 3pm – subject to weather

Social media.
Our TLF Facebook page continues to gather good support, currently with over 520 people ‘following’ us. With social media playing a large part of everyday life for a lot of people, if you are one of our followers please ‘share’ our posts with your family and friends, so that we reach a wider audience to get our messages out in the public domain.

Non-TLF fundraising.
Our huge thanks go to….
Otter Nurseries – who have again been collecting for us during 2020, with a final end of year donation of £898.55.
Caterfood – who raised £136.12 from their Christmas Jumper day.
Liz Lark from Churchill Retirement Living Sachs Lodge in Torquay – who raised £218 from making and selling face masks and bags.

Torbay Station News.
Firstly this month, I must mention the Crew/Ops team daily Christmas Songs which kept us entertained in the lead up to Christmas. They overcame their shyness to sing in public and put together the daily videos, and they certainly gave it their all. I think it gave many of us a smile, with the pressure now on the Crew for a follow-up performance for Christmas 2021!

You may have noticed that there are 2 All Weather Lifeboats on the Torbay Station pontoon at the moment. Torbay Lifeboat is due to transit to Poole HQ for scheduled maintenance in the coming weeks, so relief ALB RNLI 17-17 will be here for a while to provide operational cover whilst Torbay Lifeboat is away from Station.

2020 Shouts.
The callouts for December were…
• ALB – 1
• ILB – 4
This takes the total Shouts for our Torbay Crew during 2020 to 95 plus 3 assembly only.
It was another busy year for the Station, with varying reasons for call out, and with the added pressure of adhering to Covid safety measures and PPE.
Don’t forget you can keep up to date on all Torbay Operations at the Station’s new website – www.torbaylifeboat.co.uk.

To end this month, a TV listing…….the current TV series of Saving Lives at Sea took a break over the festive season but returns this coming Thursday on BBC2 at 8pm – be sure to tune in!

Stay safe everyone.
Lynn
