I begin this month’s update by paying tribute to some of our young fundraisers. You will have seen my recent email, and maybe our TLF social media posts, about Adam Viggars who walked from Torquay to Torbay Lifeboat Station to raise money for the RNLI. I met Adam and his mum during their walk whilst I was at our Paignton Seafront fundraiser, and 3 of our committee members then met Adam at the end of his walk at the Boathouse. Adam raised over £300 (including Gift Aid) which I am sure you will agree is a significant amount. Well Done and huge thanks to Adam.
Coming up, another of our young fundraisers – Joshua Spear, is running the Torbay Half Marathon in September and we wish him good luck with his run and his fundraising. There is still time to donate to Joshua’s fundraising by visiting his Just Giving page at https://www.justgiving.com/Josh-Spear1
It is important that we recognise and back our young supporters as they are our RNLI fundraisers of the future!
TLF fundraising during June
In spite of Covid restrictions, we continued our busy fundraising programme during June.
Paignton Harbour Craft Market – 5pm to 8pm Friday evenings
Every Friday evening, we attend the Craft Market as their chosen charity, and I am so pleased to announce that so far we have raised over £900 from souvenir sales and donations. We will continue to attend until the Craft Market completes its season in August. If anyone would like to join the rota for this event, please give me a call.
Cover the Flag and Souvenir stall – 19th June
Our visit to Paignton seafront was a new location for us and proved successful. Sadly, although the weather was fine, there was a very cold easterly wind that day, so we closed down early. However, in the time we were there we raised over £269 in Cover the Flag Donations and souvenir sales. We will certainly look into re-visiting this location again!
July’s fundraising events
Fish Quay market – Tuesday 13th July – 10am until 4pm
After a long ‘covid’ absence we return for our annual market under the Old Fish Quay in Brixham. Due to the reduced space now available at the Quay we wont have so much room for our stalls, but all your favourites will be there – Crafts; RNLI Souvenirs; Second hand books; Bric-a-Brac; Nearly New/Second Scents; Jigsaws and a Cover the flag of course! Due to Covid precautions we will not be selling cakes and preserves this year.
You may have items to donate for our market but we ask that you do not take them to our Middle Street Shop as we simply do not have the room to store them. If you would like to donate items (good quality items only please) bring them along on the day, preferably before 10am. We look forward to seeing you and have our fingers crossed for good weather!
Cover the Flag – various dates
The TLF committee and I decided some months ago that even if Covid restrictions are lifted we will continue our 2021 fundraising with caution, organising events outside as much as possible where we know we can still ensure social distancing. With this in mind, our events for July and August are mainly Cover the Flag fundraisers in Brixham. Dates are below, and we still need your help to fill slots on the rota …..
July – 20th; 21st; 24th and 31st
August – 1st; 7th to 15th; 21st; 22nd; 28th and 29
Please contact Hazel Wimpress (07523 042398) or Cathy Craig (01803 857106 / 07811 269144) who will assign you to a slot.
Looking ahead to August
We are still planning our Summer Fundraising week in August, beginning on the 9th and culminating in our Torbay Station Seaside Special on 15th August. However, we are organising a smaller event this year – more details will be published soon.
TLF 100 Club Winners
Our July draw winners are…..
1st – Barbara Smithson, £24.40
2nd – Isabel Hickman, £12.20
3rd – Carol Pearson, £6.10
Don’t forget, you have to be in it to win it – contact Dave Smithson (01803 666171) if you would like to join our 100 club.
Lloyds Bank Brixham
You may have already heard that our last remaining bank in Brixham is closing in September. This will cause us difficulties with our fundraising banking, especially with the large amount of coins we bank every year from our collection boxes and Cover the Flag events. This issue has been urgently raised to the Accounts team at the RNLI and we are awaiting their response and instructions on how we work around this closure.
Victorian Collection Box
If you walk by the Man and Boy statue on Brixham Harbour in the next few weeks, you will notice that our RNLI Victorian Collection box is missing. This is because it will be away from its base from Wednesday this week for refurbishment. We are looking forward to it being restored and back in place in the near future.
Torbay Lifeboat Station news
A few weeks ago, the Station took delivery of a small RNLI tractor which is now used to launch the Torbay ILB. Gone are the days when barriers had to be put out to hold back the public whilst the ILB was launched across the walkway, and the winch to lower the ILB down the slipway is a thing of the past! CLICK HERE to view a very short video of the tractor, driven by our Second Coxswain Richard Fowler, launching the ILB recently…..
Have you ever wondered what the process is for launching the Lifeboat? Our Lifeboat Operations Manager Nick O’Brien and Station Engagement Officer David Phillips have recently written an article which explains the process. Take a look at our Station website to see the article – click here How to launch a lifeboat
Our Torbay Crew are still extremely busy…
ALB – 5
ILB – 10 plus 1 assembly only
Total Shouts for the year at end of June stands at 62.
In closing this month, I would like to give you all a little reminder that I am still looking for someone (or even a team of 2!) to take over the running of the Kiosk so that I can divert more of my volunteering hours into my Chair role. Give me a ring if you are interested in taking on this rewarding volunteering role.
