“Ice Prince”
It would be easy to look at the number of “Shouts” that our Torbay crew respond to every year and draw a great sense of pride in what they do, year on year. However, I expect there are a number of Branches for whom, over the years, certain Shouts remain in their minds for years to come.
So it is for us in Torbay in terms of the vessel the “Ice Prince”.

Today, 13th January is the 16th anniversary of the Ice Prince rescue by Torbay Lifeboat. The Ice Prince was carrying a cargo of wood which shifted in the atrocious conditions of that evening – winds of gales force 8-9, gusting storm force 10 with mountainous seas to match. The severe list of the Ice Prince meant that she was in danger of capsizing at any moment and with 20 crew on board time was of the essence to get them to safety. This shout turned out to be one of the most difficult ever performed by the Torbay Lifeboat crew.
To read all about this rescue and many other significant events, buy the “History of Torbay Lifeboat Station” which is now available at the Kiosk, by Torbay Lifeboat Station or in the Middle Street Shop.
This is essential reading for all supporters of Torbay Lifeboat. The book is written by local historian Alan Salsbury and as he says “Make a cup of tea, draw up a chair and be prepared to be enthralled …”
When Anne and I joined TLF this was our first purchase….this incident and many more, makes this book essential reading.
200 years:
Just after we compiled the above one of our staunchest supporters Roger Smith in Torquay recorded a wonderful tribute song to everyone involved in the RNLI but, I suppose particularly for our brave men and women who risk so much going to the aid of those in trouble in the waters surrounding our country. Roger is trying to raise funds for Torbay Lifeboats via his Just Giving page. Search him out on Facebook, Roger Martin Smith, listen to the song, and then donate, I am sure you will be impressed.
Kind Regards
Peter
