Welcome to your October TLF newsletter.
Before I begin TLF news, I am sure you will all join me in wishing a Happy Birthday to Torbay Lifeboat Station – celebrating 155 years of service on 3rd October – what an achievement!
This month’s newsletter is the penultimate one from me as from December our new TLF Chair will be updating you each month, and whilst on the subject of the new Chair, I am pleased to announce that Peter Thorp will be taking over from me on the 1st December.
Many of you know Peter already as he has been a TLF committee member for some time now, in the role of Events Organiser, so has a good grounding in all things TLF! Peter’s wife Anne is also a committee member as our membership secretary, and I am sure she will be a great support to Peter as he gets to grips with his new role.
I asked Peter to write a short resume of his background to help you get to know him……
Hi, I’m Peter, your new TLF Chair. So, who am I, something I have often wondered myself!
Well, following a somewhat wasted education I joined the Fire Service at the tender age of 16, and even now you may look at me and think “him, a firefighter”? because yes, I am a bit “vertically challenged”, don’t look like I have “muscles in my spit”, but the fire service is no different in many ways from the Lifeboat service. A Watch/Crew is made up of many people from different backgrounds, with different skills, physically and mentally and those skills enable us all to do the job we have chosen. After 46 years in the Fire & Rescue Service I felt tremendously proud and extremely surprised to be honoured in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee New Year Honours list, something I never use in public by the way.
When Anne and I moved to Brixham just over 3 years ago we felt and still feel, we have “come home” so it is with humble pride that I have the opportunity to become the Chair of the TLF. As you all know, OUR role is to do all we can to enable the Crews to function operationally by raising funds for their equipment, training and of course keeping our 2 Lifeboats on the water.
So please, wish me well, I will not shrink from asking for advice!
Kind Regards, Peter
I wish Peter well and am very confident that I am leaving you all in good hands!
Still on the subject of changes coming up, the management of the Kiosk will also change as from 1St December when I hand over to the following team…..
Daily running of the Kiosk / Stock control etc – this will be managed by Carol Pearson (Torbay Lifeboat Station’s Visits Officer) and Frances Ross both of whom are long-term kiosk volunteers, so have good experience of how things work.
Kiosk finances (cashing up etc) – this will be looked after by Peter and Anne Thorp.
Again, I am secure in the knowledge that the Kiosk will be left with a good team to run it when I leave.
So, moving onto our fundraising and what’s coming up in October…..
Tomorrow – 6th October – Coffee Morning at Brixham Rugby Club
This will be our first TLF organised coffee morning for many, many months, and we are quite excited to start moving towards actual fundraising gatherings again! For just £3 per person you can grab yourself a coffee and a biscuit and catch up with friends you maybe haven’t seen for a while. Joan Gibbard will be at her popular raffle table as usual during our coffee mornings.
We look forward to seeing you there from 10am until 12 noon.
Saturday 30th October – Crew -v- TLF 6th Annual Challenge (Skittles and fish supper) – 7pm at Brixham Cricket club
Our last Challenge was back in October 2019 when, as we began our game of skittles, the Crew’s pagers alerted them to a ‘Shout’ so some of them had to leave. They needn’t have worried though as the WAGs quite literally threw themselves into the game whilst they were away! Fortunately, the Crew were stood down before launching so were able to return to the game.
TLF managed to win by just 6 points in 2019 which made the overall score 3-2 to the Crew. Wouldn’t it be great to level the score before I go?
The evening is £10 per person which includes a fish (or sausage) supper and the game of skittles.
Booking is essential so that we can let the Cricket club know how many meals we need. Please call Jill Passmore on 01803 431752 to book.
November and December’s events are still being finalised and will be notified to you as soon as they are confirmed.
Fundraising during September
Coffee morning at All Saints Church – part of Sea Week
Our invitation from the Church to hold a fundraising coffee morning was very much appreciated and we raised £199.50. Our thanks to the Church for their kind invitation.
Cover the Flag and souvenir stall at Torquay seafront
This was a very good fundraising day which raised £205.96 on the Flag and £411.85 in souvenir sales! Thank you to our Torquay team for running the event.
Fish Quay Market
Our second one of the year and another very good market – taking £620.54 on the usual stalls plus £613 in souvenir sales. Thank you to everyone involved.
With Peter Thorp moving into the TLF Chair role, we now have a vacancy for our events organiser(s). It is a great volunteering role, with the opportunity to not only get to know TLF members and supporters, but also local Businesses around the Bay.
Ideally, we are looking for two people to step into this role – maybe a husband and wife or a couple of good friends?
The people who take this role will be a vital part of the TLF team as without the organisation of our fundraising events we simply couldn’t remain as successful as we are.
Please think about joining the team – give Peter a ring and he can give you all the information you need.
You can reach him on 01803 855329.
As we approach the end of the year, membership renewal is on the horizon! The best way to renew is to set up a standing order, that way you don’t have to worry about leaving envelopes in the shop or kiosk with money in. Give Anne Thorp a ring on 01803 855329 and she can provide you with all the information you need to set up a standing order.
As we begin to move towards our usual fundraising events, we need to keep a good reserve stock of raffle prizes. We only accept donations of new items but appreciate anything you can give. Please contact Joan Gibbard on 01803 857045 if you have raffle items to donate.
Torbay Station News
Again, I repeat the same words this month………another busy month for our Crew during September.
ALB – 4 shouts
ILB – 5 shouts plus one assembly only
That takes the total shouts for the year so far to 91
That’s it for my penultimate TLF newsletter, final words from me next month!
Take care all.
