Our All-weather Lifeboat (ALB) launched yesterday, Sunday 11th August, at 5.05pm to assist an injured person who had fallen badly aboard a 10m sailing yacht which was approximately 10 nautical miles east of Berry Head.
HM Coastguard also tasked a rescue helicopter in case urgent evacuation of the casualty straight to hospital was required.
Upon arrival at the yacht, Torbay RNLI transferred a crew member across. He was joined by a fellow medic winched down from the helicopter.
After examination of the casualty it was decided that the safest course of action was to keep him as still as possible and on board the sailing vessel with our medic in attendance. He was given pain relief, and the yacht was escorted by our ALB to Torquay harbour, handed over to ambulance crew and thence taken to Torquay A&E.
The rescue involved multiple transfers between boats and the helicopter.

ALB returned to station and was made ready for service by 8.35pm.
